On November 7th, the City of Los Angeles' Cultural Heritage Commission will hear our Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM) nomination for the Maycrest Bungalow Court.
This historic bungalow court in El Sereno was purchased by Caltrans in the 1960s for the ill-fated 710 freeway extension project. Since the 1990s, it has sat vacant and neglected. For the last 15 years, community members in El Sereno, centered around the Eastside Café advocacy group, have worked to restore the bungalows and convert them into a cultural center—a vision supported by the Conservancy.
Despite community requests to preserve and adaptively reuse the bungalows, Caltrans sold the property to the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA), which initially proposed demolishing the bungalows and redeveloping the site with new affordable housing. We aim to collaborate with HACLA for a "win-win" outcome, preserving and modernizing the bungalows while adding new affordable housing units, but feel HCM designation is necessary given the threat of demolition.
